Does anyone know what is going on with the Hands in Ship Bottom?  I've been going down to LBI for the past 42 years and Hands in Ship Bottom has always been there!  My Mom's friends used to own a house on 30th Street in Ship Bottom.  Now I vacation in Beach Haven Crest.  Wouldn't go anywhere else on earth and I can't WAIT until next year's vacation!!

Spent several months on LBI this past summer.  Loved the beaches.  Some very good restaurants (Bistro 14, Robertos, Green Gables, Plantation, Harvey Cedars Clam Bar, Stefanos, Ravioli & More, Engleside).  Fun stores:  Hands, Fish Heads, Coconuts, Earth Sea & Sky, Tropics, Summer House.  Met lots of nice people (even people from NYC!) except for some arrogant, unfriendly, and unsophisticated policechildren (too young & immature to be called men) who only seemed to be interested in issuing tickets and rudely ordering people around.

I grew up going to LBI and it has always had a special place in my heart. All the wonderful memories...clamming with Grandpa, walks on the beach, ghost stories with Gramma and boogie-boarding with friends. Fell in love as a child and now I am introducing this wonderful getaway with my own children. Even though we live in Virginia, my heart is here "down the shore"

Times have changed and so have the people. I miss the times when no one knew WHERE Long Beach Island was. I've called Ship Bottom my "Little Piece of Paradise" for almost 38 years. Today it's full of "want to be's" that need to be flown in from the Hamptons to make themselves feel important. I have one thing to say to these people "GO HOME" !! I bet 9 out of 10 of them couldn't even tell you they climbed the Lighthouse ! That is why I chose to wait till the off season to visit the Island ... That's Long Beach Island not LBI !!!

I am very sad that the summer is over and it will be many months until I visit LBI again. Like every
year this one was great! I love being down at the water and shopping at all the stores. However the
best part of being down at LBI this summer was when my boyfriend and friends went swimming in the
ocean at night! It was such a fun time. So long LBI, hope to visit you soon!

I love LBI! my grandpartens bought their summer house/retirement home there in 1971. For over 30 years I have spent every summer at LBI. My grandparents just pasted away and I miss them very much. But I will never  forget them and I'll never miss a summer at LBI as long as I live. I'm now 42. My children look foward to our vacations on LBI.

I grew up in NY and just moved back East after being away 20 years. I smartened up and moved to New Jersey. Last week I visited the Jersey Shore for the first time in my life. We went to Point Pleasant. It was great. This weekend we're off to LBI to visit some dear friends of ours from London (don't ask). I've only heard good things about LBI and know we'll have a fantastic couple of days. BTW, this is a really good website. I especially loved the music!

Just returned from our first trip to LBI..we stayed in Beach Haven and it was wonderful!  Here are a few recommendations of
places to go and not go...
TO GO:
Tuckers...didn't eat there but they had a nice bar w/ great drink specials Sun. thru Thursday.
Howards...great food & great service...BYOB...no reservations but it's worth the wait...try the crab cake appetizer.
Engleside...terrific food...probably the best around...great sushi...great service...nice wine list.
Sea Shell...their beach bar is a perfect oasis after a few hours at the beach.  Lunch & dinner are both great however the
service, at times, has a little to be desired.
B&B Department Store...tons of really nice bathing suits for 1/2 price.
Silver Sun Mall...great LBI t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, etc...very affordable.  Also, you'll find one of the only places
in the area to get a manicure and pedicure.  Great staff!
Chicken/Egg...feel like a snack?  Great wings!  Open 24 hours.
NOT TO GO:
Morrison's...this place was horrible...it's hard to believe they've been in business for something like 40 years.  They
obviously make their money from the 1st time suckers like us...I guarantee they do not get any repeat customers!  There
were 10 of us...every appetizer and every entree was wretched...and it wasn't cheap!  The only salvation is that it's right
on the water and it's BYOB.
Black Whale Boat Cruise to Atlantic City...the cruise itself is fine however the 'live entertainment' makes you want to
throw yourself overboard!  Also, it takes a little over 2 hours to get there...and once you get there you need to take a
shuttle to get to the Boardwalk...by then it's almost time to turn around a come home!  Take the bus trip instead.
HAVE FUN IN LBI!

My family goes every year- my uncles own a HUGE house. (anyone seen it? it's on the end of delaware avenue, on the left side, with the bay for a backyard. it looks kinda old on the outside but is soooo nice) anyway we alays rent our own house and i have to say the best one is 117 east 17th avenue in beach haven. soooo close to the beach and really pretty. by the way someone said

something about the 36 hole golf course being closed for "three custom homes". i don't know about the golf but i know there used to be an amazing arcade near there that's now a custom home...:(. Places I recommend in beach haven: Silver Sun mall and jewelry store (closed on saturdays), Island Sun jewelry store, Just Bead It, Hand's, Meltdown ice cream on delaware avenue, The Sand Trap golf course, Country Kettle Fudge. (duh). Also on the way off the island coming from beach haven, on the right side there is a used book store that's the BEST- everything is way cheap. n e way, gr8 site!

My family has been vacationing at LBI for more than 30 years now. One of the most appealing aspects of the Island that I have found are the people. Business and homeowners alike were always very pleasant and courteous. Today unfortunately, I found one exception, at the Hotel St. Rita. I was in a last minute situation where I needed to be on LBI for one night this month. This resulted in my calling many hotels on the Island looking for a room. I am fully aware of seasonal hotel policies that require two to four minimum night stays in the peak of summer. As expected, many hotels were full, and some others required several nights. What to do?? Upon a realtors suggestion, I called the Chamber of Commerce who gave me some suggestions of some other hotels or rooms that may possibly accomodate me. One suggestion was the Hotel St. Rita. upon receiving the number, I called immediately and spoke to a woman who was both honest and courteous, who told me that they have a two night minimum, and that I could call back in a week, closer to my requested night, and see if there were any cancellations or if they could accomodate me. She gave me her name and the name of another contact to ask for in her absence.  That day came today. I called the St. Rita and asked for the woman whom I spoke with, who was not there, and then was speaking to the other contact she had provided. I briefly tried to explain my situation, that I had called a week ago and upon the hotels suggestion, called back today to see if a one night accomodation was possible. The reply I received was not professional, courteous or pleasant. This woman scolded me for even asking for such a thing as a one night reservation in the middle of August and that she would never hold a reservation for just one night. I tried to explain that it upon the prior suggestion of the hotel for me to call back. She reiterated her position, which shocked me and said, "I am the owner of the St. Rita, goodbye," and hung up the phone.  Is this the way to treat prospective customers? I am only true to my word in saying that I was not insistent nor combative but this woman was downright nasty. I left this conversation dumbfounded and angry. I am ready to complain to whoever will listen, and its possible that no one will. But I guarrantee, the Chamber of Commerce, the newspapers and any other medium I can use, will hear about this rash injustice done to a prospective customer.  I am a white collar professional and I am fully aware of business policies. However, couldn't this woman be as cordial as the other dozen or so hotels I called and kindly reply? This does not sound like a people oriented service
professional to me. Lastly, this "owner" may run a hotel, but with all the money she'll pull in this summer, she couldn't buy a clue when it comes to class or customer service. I apologize for the tone and venting session, but this is intolerable.  By the way, a hotel DID accomodate me, but I followed up with this place because I wanted to stay there in Beach Haven. Never again.  I guess the best of all things, even LBI have  blemishes.

We've been coming to Long Beach Island for many years. My husband came as a child with his family to Ship Bottom as far back as 1961. It is truly my favorite vacation. We usually stay in Beach Haven now, and are very happy that everything is so nearby. I would love to retire there. Too bad we didn't think of buying a house long before this. My parents rented the same beach house every year, for years. I have the best memories there in the seventies. My husband and I took our kids up there a year ago and they loved as much as I did, alot has changed. I wish you could shop online at all the shops down there, we could use some new LBI t-shirts. Thanks!

I have to work everyday for the next 8 days and the only thing that is going to get me through it is knowing that I'll be at LBI in 9 days. I am soooo excited and that is all I have been thinking about for a month now. I absolutly love being at LBI and I am the most happy when I am there. Just thinking about it puts a huge smile on my face. My boyfriends family rents a house for a week that is two houses from the ocean. I love going to bed at night and hearing the waves crash! Our family owned a house on LBI in the 50's in Harvey Cedars. Those were some of the best summers of my life! There was hardly anyone else on the beach back then! It was sold late 60's (I wish it wasn't!).Our house was across the street from an artist named Mimi. She painted portraits of my sister and I. Does anyone remember her or does her family still own a house on LBI? Please write me ~~ I still have the paintings. Elissa

I used to go to LBI for vacations. In fact I went 18 years in a row for vacation. I live in California now and as much as the seashore is beautiful, it isn't LBI. LBI has a beauty all of it's own. It also has something that CA doesn't...fish off the beach within casting distance. Love you LBI.

Grew up in S. Jersey and went to LBI every summer for two weeks, and every other chance in between! Now that I live in GA and my parents are in CA, there has been little reason to visit New Jersey. Two years ago we got smart and decided to have family reunions on LBI. So, as I read ll these entries and remember the gret times, I, too, am counting down the days until our July visit. It truly doesn't seem like summer without a trip to the shore, even if you're 40 years old!! Thanks for the memories...

I long time visitor since 1981, I couldn't imagine vacationing anywhere else during my summer vacation. I am now 25 yrs old now and love every minute I am on the island. Yea, there might not be a board walk or all the fast past motion, but thats what makes LBI what it is.. A place to relax and spend time with family. I missed it so much over the winter, a few friends and I had a girls weekend there last weekend (5/21-5/23) and had a BLAST. Thanks for the fun... the bartenders at Kubels Too are great.. Check it out sometime... I think its in Ship Bottom going towards Bay Village on the right hand side after the causeway entrance on the main line :) Enjoy your summer everyone.. I will be back the end of June :)

Though I have lived in Massachusetts for 25 years, NJ is still my home and there is nothing like LBI and the Jersey Shore. We spend our summers at Beach Haven. I remember a particular time sitting in traffic on the bay bridge and this fellow (who was just flirting with my daughter of course) yelled, "Hey, you have THE CAPE in Massachusetts". We both yelled back...."we're Jersey girls." There is nothing like the Jersey Shore and LBI...I've been to the Cape, Martha's Vineyard, RI beaches, Old Orchard, Hilton Head, Myrtle Beach....there is no comparison.....When I tell friends I'm going on vacation, they know I'm going home to the Jersey shore. But I'll take the golf in Hilton Head and Myrtle Beach any time!

so many memories at LBI!!! driving across the causeway and being the first one to see a seagull or Ron Jon's, minigolfing at night, getting ice cream from the ice cream man, walking on the beach with my dads lantern, swimming in the ocean when it was getting dark, climbing on the lifeguard stand and pretending to be lifeguards, crabbing, and so many more memories! i met my best friend at LBI about 8 years ago (hi sara!) and to this day we are still best friends even though we live a few hours away from each other.  LBI is so different from other beaches-it feels like a real home!  I hope it always stays this way....lets all keep it clean so we can enjoy it forever!

I just recently took a ride down to LBI (3 wks ago) and of course it was pretty dead down there. But I will be going back down in the summertime with family and friends. I have such great memories of LBI. I was wondering what happened to Crane's Resturant? That was my favorite restuarant.

This summer will be my 40th season on LBI - Ship Bottom, to be exact. My first visit was one month before my first birthday, in 1964. I will be 40 in August and plan to celebrate on LBI with my family. What was an annual tradition for my mom, dad, sister and myself for most of my life will now hopefully be a family tradition for my husband, myself and our two young sons. There is nothing like LBI- still clean, safe, family-oriented and close to home (NY), it is the BEST place to bring a young family for a great vacation.

My family would visit LBI every year from 1984-1999 while vacationing with our cousins who lived in Barnegat. I always enjoyed the island. Many fond memories.... I will never forget climbing Barnegat Lighthouse for the 1st time (one month after having gallbladder surgery) Recommendation: Don't ever try to do this after major surgery. It was tough but what a beautiful site when I reached the top!!!!! Also, being at the Barnegat end when a storm hit the island and then my first experience driving over the causeway back to Manahawkin. What a trip!!!! Talk about holding onto the steering wheel. My cousin still laughs about this. He was only 8 and he thought it was hilarious. Always bought tons of souvenirs to bring back to Pittsburgh from a place I thought was called Andy's (at Barnegat Lighthouse). I did not see it listed under the shops. Does it still exist? Many GREAT memories. I would recommend everyone to visit this island. I have been all over the Carribean and nothing compares to the serenity of LBI. My cousins have since moved back to PA and I miss visiting the island. Hope to return someday to re-live those wonderful memories on your BEAUTIFUL ISLAND.

Very nice site. I am from Norwood, MA and was introduced to LBI by my parents. We used to vacation in Beach Haven on the bayside at a place called McCaffery's Dock on West Street in the 60's into the mid 70's (my dad remembers going to Beach Haven in the 40's with his parents). McCaffery's Dock had a large white main house and there were 6 cabins that they rented. I have fond memories of the beaches, Hartmans Amusement Park, the Lucy Evelyn, Bay Village, the Frosted Mug, etc. I have been back a few times in the past 5 years and hope to vacation again this summer in Beach Haven. It is truly a magical place - those that grew up spending summers there know exactly what I mean. I am now bringing my family (wife and two boys) to the place that I hold so many great memories of.

I am10 years old and I have been going to LBI since I was in my moms stomach and I still go now. LBI is great if anybody has never been their they have to go. I have gone to Barnegat light, Beach Haven, North Beach and Harvey Cedars. The by far Best beaches are Barnegat light, Beach Haven and Harvey Cedars. If you have never been to LBI and you are planing to go you should definently go to Fantasy Island (amusment park). It`s so much fun for kids and even adults. My dad and mom are 42 years old and they have been going since they were in there mothers stomachs. LBI is the greatest place on earth you should difinently go there.

I love Long Beach Island. I’ve been going there all my life. I always go in July, and we go mini gulfing and we go to Fantasy Island. There are such beautiful and clean beaches there, and the restaurants are great. This horrible winter is

We also had a house in Barnegat on the mainland. I bit hesitant to go back as I`m afraid what I may find. Thanks, Karen Grimes- Griffin

Aaah, I just drove down to Beach Haven this evening (because I'm addicted to going there and I just wanted to drive around - if it was even a lil bit warmer I would've walked up to the ocean), and you know what I saw? The Beacon 36 hole golf course is GONE! It's been completely wiped out and 3 "custom homes" are being built in its spot. I am shocked! And upset, I really liked that golf place. They just spent what had to be a lot of money the past year or two making it nicer with concrete and better holes and stuff too.. wonder why they sold out..

Does anyone reading this remember partying and bon-fires at the end of Susan Ave in Holgate during the late '70s and early 80's??  There was a guy everyone called "King-Tut" who would dance around the fire. There was a girl who was totally into Genesis new album... ABACAB.  We used to call here the party queen.  I can remember some names... Leo and Maria were brother and

sister from Mahwah.  Jim Kick went to Passaic Valley High School.  Kim Lewis was my soulmate (I still think about you from time to time Kim). Those were magical times.  Listening to the Doors, drinking Genesee Cream Ale.  There was a kid named Sean (I think).  I think he was like 11 years old. He used to put away a pint of Jack Daniels like it was water.  If you remember any of this send me an e-mail!
